Proving that it is not always how you start, but how you finish that matters, the Lady Bears overcame a sluggish first quarter Monday night to run their record to 3-0 with a 68-47 win over Baton Rouge Community College in the first night of the annual Southwest/Coca-Cola Classic.

After taking an early 3-0 lead on an old-fashioned three-point play by
Danyelle Lewis, the Lady Bears saw their opponents go on a 12-2 run to take a 12-5 lead with 2:16 left in the first quarter. A pair of Amari Pittman free throws then narrowed the Lady Bears' deficit to 12-7 at the end of the quarter.

The teams traded baskets in the early going of the second quarter and were tied three times in the first 3:35. After BRCC tied the game at 20-20, the Lady Bears scored eight straight to go up 28-20 with 3:15 left in the half. They then took a 33-26 advantage into the locker room at intermission.

Lewis' three pointer with 6:34 left in the third quarter gave the Lady Bears their largest lead at the time, 41-30. BRCC then went on a 10-4 spurt to close to within 45-40 with 1:44 on the clock. The Lady Bears led 48-43 at the end of the quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Lady Bears as they outscored BRCC (0-4) 20-4 and reached the final score on a
Tootie Carter basket with 1:08 left in the game.

"We had a tendency to settle on offense early," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris, "but our press created some easy opportunities to give us a lead. Danyelle hit some big threes and our freshmen continue to give us a spark when we need it."

Lewis led the Lady Bears with 15 points while Pittman recorded 13 points.
Keturah Bingham picked up 14 rebounds while Jamaya Galloway chipped in eight assists. The Lady Bears were nearly perfect from the free throw line, hitting 20 of 25.

Rosa Reynard scored 19 points for BRCC to lead all scorers. The visitors were 13-21 at the charity stripe.

The Lady Bears close out their part of the Coca-Cola Classic Tuesday with a 5:30 matchup against the Southern-Shreveport Lady Jaguars.
