The Lady Bears closed out the 2015 portion of their schedule Saturday afternoon with a 59-49 road win, their sixth straight victory, at Baton Rouge Community College.

With the win, the Lady Bears moved to 9-1 on the season (they are 2-0 in the MACJC South Division). BRCC dropped to 5-6.

The game was tied three times in the first 3:10 of the first quarter. With the score knotted at 6-6, a
Gabriella Cortez layup and Shalisa Hawthorne three-pointer served as bookends to a 16-2 Lady Bears run that gave them an 18-8 lead with 2:19 left in the quarter. They went on to a 20-10 lead at the end of the first 10:00.

BRCC cut their deficit to three points, 22-19, on Doniesha Young's three-pointer with 3:33 left in the second quarter. But seven points from Cortez helped the Lady Bears go back up by eight, 29-21and they took a 33-25 lead into the locker room at the end of the first half.

The Lady Bears looked ready to blow the game wide open in the third quarter. Scoring nine of the second half's first 13 points, capped by a pair of
Alissa Adam free throws, they took a 42-29 lead with 4:22 on the clock. But, BRCC then went on a 10-4 run to close out the quarter to narrow the Lady Bears' advantage to 46-39 with one quarter remaining.

BRCC opened the fourth quarter by scoring six of the first nine points to come to within four points, 49-45, with 5:15 left in the game. But, two Cortez free throws and a
Chelsea James bucket pushed the Lady Bears' lead back to eight points, 53-45, with 2:46 still to play and they went on to the 10-point victory.

The Lady Bears' picked up the win despite shooting only 21-64 from the field (they held BRCC to 21-66), causing head coach Brent Harris to say, "It may not have been pretty to the fans, but it was pretty to my eye because we had so many tough plays that we had to come up with down the stretch."

"It was a huge win going into the Christmas break," Harris continued. "Maybe it will motivate them (our players) while they're at home (during the break). Hopefully we can ride this momentum (when we return)."

Cortez topped the Lady Bears, and all scorers, with 24 points. She also had five rebounds and three steals.

Adam was also in double figures with 13 points while also recording six rebounds and eight assists.
Teshia Jones added 10 points. The Lady Bears hit 12 of 17 free throws.

Pearl Jones led BRCC with 14 points. She and her teammates combined to make five of nine free throws.

The Lady Bears will return to action on January 4 with a non-division game in Moorhead against the Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans.
