Lady Bears make it 11 in a row with 75-72 win at Co-Lin

The Southwest Lady Bears picked up a huge MACJC South Division win Monday, their 11th victory in a row, with a 75-72 nail-biter against arch-rival Co-Lin in Wesson. The win propelled the Lady Bears to 11-1 on the season and 3-0 in the South. Co-Lin fell to 7-5, 0-3.

A pair of April Levy free throws had Southwest up 10-2 early in the game. Co-Lin then scored 12 of the next 17 points to pull to within one point, 15-14, with 10:29 left in the half. Ignited by a pair of Katrina Littlepage free throws, the Lady Bears then exploded to a 19-4 tear to push their lead to 16 points, 24-18, with 4:30 showing. The home team scored eight of the final 10 points of the half to come to within 10 points, 36-36, at the end of the half.

The Lady Bears threatened to blow the game wide open in the second half. A pair of Levy three-pointers to open the final period pushed their lead back to 16 points, 42-26, with 18:02 left in the game. The lead went to 18 points, 58-40, on a Littlepage free throw with 10:15 to play.

However, Co-Lin would refuse to go quietly. Down by 11, 64-53, with 4:50 to go, the Lady Wolves outscored Southwest 14-7 to reduce their deficit to four points, 71-67, with 0:26 on the clock. But, the Lady Bears would not be denied as Littlepage went 4-4 from the free throw line to give them a 75-69 cushion with 0:03 to play. A Co-Lin three-pointer at the buzzer proved to be too little, too late.

"I'm very proud of our focus tonight," said second-year Southwest head coach Brent Harris. "April, Katrina and Courtney (Epting) were all very good and Talisa also gave us good minutes off the bench. Now, we have to finish games with more intensity and attention to detail."

Littlepage and Levy led the Lady Bears' offense with 25 and 20 points, respectively. Epting was also in double figures with 11 points. Sherman added six points while Tee Myers and Fredrikah Wilson both scored four.

Raven Reyes netted three points for Southwest while Madison Mault chipped in with two. The Lady Bears hit 24 of 37 free throws.

Claresa Banks led the Co-Lin effort with 18 points. The Lady Wolves made good on 19 of 26 free throws.

The Lady Bears try to keep their winning streak going at home Thursday night then they host Pearl River. The game is set to get underway at 5:30.
