Lady Bears fall to Pearl River

The Southwest Lady Bears took another one on the chin Thursday night as they dropped a 58-47 decision to the visiting Pearl River Lady Wildcats. The Bears’ hunt for a spot in the MACJC State playoffs took a tough, though not fatal, hit as they dropped a nail-biter, 72-69.

The Lady Bears (3-16, 0-8) fought hard the entire night, but it again was just not meant to be. After taking a six-point lead, 10-4, on a Cassie Berry basket with 16:45 left in the first half, Southwest saw the Lady Wildcats (12-5, 5-3) come back to go on top 12-11 with 14:02 on the clock. That began a 25-9 run for the visitors that saw them take a 37-20 lead into the break.

Proving they still had some fight left in them, the Lady Bears fought back in the second half. Pulling back to within five points, 47-42, on a Shanekqua Bibbs three-pointer with 6:06 to play, Southwest appeared ready to end their long losing skid.

Unfortunately, the Lady Wildcats were able to regain their composure and extended their lead back to 10 points, 53-43, with 3:09 on the clock before finally leaving with the 11 point win.

Bibbs led the Lady Bears, and all scorers, with 16 points on the night. Shaniece Sheffield added 14 points while Cassie Berry and Lacey Orr both scored six. Julencia Brown totaled three points with Casey Brumfield adding two. Southwest made 18 of 22 free throws.

Pearl River was led by Shanta’ Echols’ 13 points. The Lady Wildcats hit nine of 19 free throws.

Southwest hits the road for its next contests as the Lady Bears and Bears face East Central Monday night in Decatur. The ladies’ game is set for a 6:00 tip with the men to follow at 8:00.
