Lady Bears fall at Mississippi Delta

The 2012 portion of the basketball season got off to a rough start for the Southwest Lady Bears Monday night as they dropped an 82-48 decision on the road at Mississippi Delta.

The Lady Trojans (6-4) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and were never seriously challenged in the first half as they built a 44-17 lead after the first 20 minutes.

The Lady Bears (3-8) fell behind 55-24 early in the second half, but went on a 16-3 run to close the gap somewhat to 17 points, 59-42, with 8:32 left in the game. That, however, proved to be as close as it would get as Delta quickly regained their composure and cruised the rest of the way.

The one bright spot on the night for the Lady Bears was Shaniece Sheffield who hit six of 12 field goals and seven of 10 free throws to finish the game with 20 points.

Shanekqua Bibbs scored nine points and Alexis Avery scored six. Taylor Williams totaled five points while Julencia Brown had four. Casey Brumfield and Lacey Orr both contributed two points. Southwest was nine of 19 from the free throw line.

Dominique Walker scored 22 points for Delta to lead all scorers. The Lady Trojans made 20 of 30 free throws.

Southwest makes its first home court appearance of 2012 Thursday night when they host men and women of Holmes. The night gets underway with the ladies tip off at 5:00.
